Wolves – Apex Predators – Lesson
These amazing animals live, hunt, and play in packs.
Wolves are extraordinary animals. They are so intriguing that they have become the subject of many books and films over the years. The old fairy tales Little Red Riding Hood and The Three Little Pigs portray the wolf as a mean, thieving, and even deadly creature. Many movies capture the wolf as a strong, protective, and powerful being. The Twilight series of books and films highlights the lives of vampires and wolves who live as humans but can transform when necessary into more powerful and capable versions of themselves, displaying the brute strength, speed, agility, and natural protectiveness of wolves.
Wolves are a part of the canine family Canis lupus. The dog-like mammal is an apex predator native to Europe, Asia, and North America. Wolves play a crucial role in the ecosystem in which they live. As top predators, wolves help to maintain balance by keeping prey populations under control. The large animal spends its life within a pack. It is even common for monogamous relationships between male and female to exist within a pack.
The Evolution, Appearance, and Behavior of the Wolf
While the exact evolution of wolves is debated, they likely evolved, along with coyotes, from a line of small canids that lived during the Pliocene epoch (5.332 million to 1.806 million years ago). The first wolves are believed to have migrated to North America about 750,000 years ago.
Wolves weigh an average of 85 pounds but sometimes can reach 175 pounds. Their fur is typically brown or gray, and in arctic areas it can be whiter. It is common for the color of the animal’s fur to mimic natural surroundings. The four-legged carnivorous creatures have long, fluffy tails, thick fur, and large, pointy ears. Females are often smaller (by up to 40 pounds) than the males.
Wolf packs number four to eight, doing everything together, from hunting and traveling to playing. The pack watches over a territory that covers 25 to 100 miles of land. Often, wolves are the dominant animals on the food chain in the area where they choose to live.
Habitat, Prey, and Predators
About 30 species of wolves exist around the world. They make homes in all kinds of terrain, including forests, wetlands, arctic areas, pastures, deserts, and even rocky mountain peaks. Several factors help wolves determine a quality place to live. The availability of food, weather conditions, and the number of humans in the area all play a role in assessing the appropriate home.
A wolf’s diet mostly consists of different types of ungulates, or hooved animals.Deer, elk, wild boar, and wild horses are all potential prey. In lean times, the dominant animals eat smaller mammals and rodents. In certain areas, wolves are known to snack on berries and some fruits. An adult wolf needs to eat around five to seven pounds of food each day to remain healthy and strong.
Because wolves are apex predators, they are at the top of the food chain and not often prey. Other apex predators, such as bears, lions, and tigers, can threaten the life of a wolf, though the fight can go either way. Wolves do much better when they fight with their pack rather than alone. Humans are arguably their greatest threat. Farmers trying to protect their livestock, hunters, and poachers pose danger to wolves. As is common with many animals, deforestation affects wolf populations. When trees are removed, so are potential prey and habitats for the animal.
There are approximately 300,000 wolves around the globe. Some species, like the red wolf, are critically endangered; however, efforts are being made to replenish the population. Overall, the species is safe from extinction.
From Pup to Adult Wolf
After about a three-month pregnancy, a mother wolf gives birth to four to six pups, born weighing just one or two pounds with their eyes closed. Because of their vulnerability, only one or two survive from each litter. Those quickly gain weight and, at about a year old, begin hunting with their pack. The animals reach full size around age two and live four to eight years in the wild. Wolves kept in zoos or other forms of captivity can live as long as 15 years.
They are popular in books, movies, TV shows, cartoons, and other forms of entertainment. Their size and fierce appearance make them a popular subject. Raksha from The Jungle Book movie is a memorable wolf character, along with the pack of wolves made famous in the vampire movie saga Twilight.
Wolves are remarkable mammals that are crucial to keeping our ecosystems in working order. It is important to make it possible for wolves to thrive in the areas where they live.

- Wolves are apex predators with few predatory threats.
- Wolves travel, hunt, live, and play in packs of four to eight members.
- Wolves are not currently at risk of extinction, though humans are a threat.
