Beagles – Big-Hearted Scent Hounds – Lesson

These dogs are bred for their incredible tracking skills.

What is something that has droopy ears, is highly energetic, is a natural hunter, and needs constant mental stimulation? If you guessed a beagle, you would be correct! This excellent breed of dog has a lot to offer, both as man’s best friend and as an incredible hunting companion. Originally from Britain, beagles came to America around the 1840s or possibly even earlier. They are wonderful house pets and farm dogs, with a sterling reputation as phenomenal rabbit hunters.

Amazing Hunters

Beagles are known for their keen sense of smell that makes them excellent at tracking small mammals. They are especially skilled at hunting rabbits and hares, an activity known as beagling. The dogs successfully adapt to different hunting scenarios. For instance, elderly hunters benefit because they are able to comfortably ride on horseback to avoid overexertion. They are also good companions for young hunters, who keep up on small ponies. Even poor hunters who likely lacked the money for horses utilized the skills of beagles by hunting with the dogs on foot.

Beagles eventually fell out of favor for hunting hare but have remained the go-to for sniffing out rabbits. Hunting laws worldwide have changed over the years, but some countries still allow rabbit hunting with the permission of homeowners. In situations where beagle owners want to exercise their dogs’ skills without harming animals, drag hunting suffices. This is a sport in which people ride horseback chasing a mob of beagles or hounds that are following an artificial scent. In the movie Mary Poppins, this sport is highlighted in the chalk fairground scene.

Size, Appearance, and Behavior

Beagles are relatively small canines, and females tend to be smaller than males. Males average about 1.3 feet in height and 2 to 3 feet in length. On average, a male beagle weighs around 29 pounds, while its female counterpart weighs around 20 pounds. They are cute, with long, floppy ears and large, brown- to-hazel eyes. Their thick fur is typically multicolored with white, black, and tan, though some secondary colors occasionally come into play, such as red, brown, cream, and even spots. Their long ears and loose facial skin are believed to aid in their sharp sense of smell because scents become trapped in the folds.

They have a white tip on their tail that helps humans locate them in tall weeds and grassy areas. Also, coming to a human’s aid is a beagle’s loud voice that can be heard from long distances. If you have ever heard a hound bark, you understand the level of sound they can produce.

Beagles are energetic and require constant stimulation. If bored, they can be rather destructive. For those who own these dogs as pets, it is important to provide plenty of play time and lots of toys when they are home alone or resting.

Their sociability and affection for humans and other animals make them great family pets. However, they are incredibly headstrong and stubborn, so it is important to train them properly while they are still puppies. Also, they lack the common puppy smell and constant drooling, while being minimal shedders. Like other dogs, they go through a couple of shedding phases every year, but the hair loss both at the time of shedding and the time in between is much less than that of a typical long- or short-haired dog.

What Do Beagles Like to Eat?

A beagle should be fed a healthy, balanced diet of high-quality dog food that provides the required nutrients. All dogs are omnivores, which means they eat both meat and vegetables and other plant-based foods.

Beagles are prone to allergies and are known to have sensitive skin. Feeding a beagle the correct diet reduces the risk of skin infections and allergic reactions. Consult with a veterinarian to decide what food is best for your beagle’s health. Additionally, these dogs have a tendency to quickly become obese or overweight. Maintaining a steady diet can help keep their pounds in check. Slow-feeder bowls are often a good idea because beagles have a tendency to eat too quickly and then vomit.

Along with a healthy diet, beagles require a good amount of daily exercise. Take your pup on daily walks or a quick trip to the dog park so the pet can run off some energy and get adequate exercise.

Beagles are adorable, fun-loving animals that make great family pets. While they require diet, exercise, and mental stimulation, they can make great and loyal additions to your family. For those who wish to utilize these dogs’ skills as hunters, they will not disappoint. Their keen sense of smell and overall energy make them great hunting companions.

  1. Beagles have a great sense of smell that makes them excellent hunters.
  2. Beagles need constant mental stimulation, or they can become destructive.
