Trump Chooses Airbnb Co-Founder as First Government Design Chief
President Donald Trump picked Joe Gebbia, the co-founder of Airbnb, as the nation’s first Chief Design Officer. Gebbia was selected to lead the current administration’s initiative to transform the federal government’s design language into one that is “usable and beautiful.” Gebbia, who joined the Department of Government Efficiency earlier this year, will report to White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles.
Nikki Haley Blasts Trump’s 10% Stake in Intel
Nikki Haley, a former governor and 2024 Republican presidential candidate, slammed the current administration’s recent deal with chipmaker Intel. The White House and the struggling company agreed to give the US government a 10% stake in Intel in exchange for the almost $11 billion from the Biden-era CHIPS and Science Act. “Biden was wrong to subsidize the private sector with the Chips Act using our tax dollars. The counter to Biden is not to lean in and have govt own part of Intel,” Haley said on X. “This will only lead to more government subsidies and less productivity. Intel will become a test case of what not to do.”
US-India Trade Negotiations Continue Ahead of 50% Tariff Rate
With only days until the August 27 deadline for the US tariff rate on New Delhi to rise to 50%, Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar stated at an August 23 Economic Times event that discussions between the two sides are ongoing. “I mean, negotiations are still going on in the sense that nobody said the negotiations are off. You know? I mean, and people, people do talk to each other,” the foreign official said, adding that his government maintains “red lines” to protect the nation’s farmers and small businesses.

US District Judge Paula Xinis, an Obama appointee, on Monday placed a temporary block on the Trump administration’s efforts to deport alleged MS-13 gang member Kilmar Abrego Garcia to Uganda. Abrego Garcia turned himself in to US Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials, who were preparing to deport him before Xinis stepped in.

Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook to Sue Trump
Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook plans to sue President Trump over his decision to fire her, according to Cook’s attorney. “President Trump has no authority to remove Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook,” attorney Abbe Lowell said in a statement to the press. “We will be filing a lawsuit challenging this illegal action.” Experts say the legal battle could ultimately reach the Supreme Court. Trump, in an August 25 letter, stated that he was removing her “for cause” due to allegations of mortgage fraud.
Democrats Flip Iowa State Senate Seat, Ending Republican Supermajority
Iowa’s GOP supermajority is over. Democrat Catelin Drey defeated Republican Christopher Prosch in the race to replace the late state Sen. Rocky De Witt (R), who passed away in June. This was a crucial victory for state Democrats, as it now ensures that nominees from Gov. Kim Reynolds (R) are no longer approved on a party-line vote. A two-thirds majority is required for nominees to be confirmed, and the chamber will now see 33 Republicans and 17 Democrats.
Poll: Kamala Harris, Gavin Newsom Top Democratic 2028 Primary Field
Former Vice President Kamala Harris and California Governor Gavin Newsom (D) are the leading presidential contenders for the Democratic Party. According to a new Morning Consult survey, Harris was the leading candidate, with 29% support, but this is down from 36% in March. Newsom, meanwhile, has 19% support among Democrats and Democratic-leaning independent voters, up from 11%. Former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) registered 9% and 6% support, respectively.
Cracker Barrel Reverts to Old Logo After Social Media Backlash
Cracker Barrel is doing a U-turn, announcing that it will abandon the new logo and revert to the old one following online backlash. “We thank our guests for sharing your voices and love for Cracker Barrel. We said we would listen, and we have. Our new logo is going away and our ‘Old Timer’ will remain,” the company said in a statement. Shares of Cracker Barrel tanked about 10% following the rebranding, but the stock climbed 7% in after-hours trading on the company’s news.

Shooter Kills 2 Children, Wounds 17 at Minneapolis Catholic School
Two children were killed, and 17 other people were injured at a Catholic school and church in Minneapolis. A trans-identifying man, Robert “Robin” Westman, opened fire outside the building as the children attended Mass at Annunciation Church and School. The shooter then killed himself.
CDC Officials Resign Over ‘Weaponizing of Public Health’

At least four top officials at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) submitted their resignations on August 27. According to The Hill, the four individuals are Demetre C. Daskalakis, director of the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases; Daniel Jernigan, director of the National Center for Emerging and Zoonotic Infectious Diseases; Jennifer Layden, director of the Office of Public Health Data, Surveillance and Technology; and CDC Chief Medical Officer Debra Houry have all stepped down from their positions. They claim that recent policy announcements from the current administration are hindering them from fulfilling their missions as public health leaders.
Poll: US Voters Don’t Think Putin Would Honor Ukraine Peace Deal
Can the United States trust Russian President Vladimir Putin? According to a new Quinnipiac University poll, 76% of US voters do not trust Putin to honor a peace agreement with Ukraine. Eighteen percent said they trust Putin enough to stand by a peace deal if both sides reached a conclusion. Distrust was widespread, affecting 91% of Democrats, 77% of independents, and 62% of Republicans.
