US and UAE Ally to Create AI Task Force

The use of artificial intelligence, or AI, is becoming increasingly prevalent in the Pentagon. In July 2026,  the Department of War (DoW) reached out to its Middle East partner, the United Arab Emirates, known as the UAE, to collaborate on the first bilateral (two-country) task force to explore the value of AI as a military tool. In the AI world, the quantitative and qualitative information edge goes to the armed forces with the ability to process information the most rapidly.

Partnering in AI Development

The ability for AI to process large amounts of information quickly has found a home in the Pentagon, which is reaching out to regional partners to collaborate in developing defense systems that operate in an integrated fashion. According to a July 28 CENTCOM press release, “The US-UAE task force, named Task Force Talon Synapse, is scheduled to formally launch in the coming weeks. The Abu Dhabi-based team will consist of approximately 20 American and Emirati personnel with expertise in AI, data, and cybersecurity.” The emphasis of Task Force Talon Synapse will be to support intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance programs in the region, as well as to provide protection for critical infrastructure and to monitor “the regional security environment.”

The UAE is an ideal partner in the Gulf region, as the Emirates have made significant investments in developing AI relationships with US technology enterprises, making it highly appealing as an AI partner. As Forbes explained: “The task force deepens the security relationship between the two countries but also frames American-developed AI systems as the security standard — rather than allowing allies to rely on Chinese technology.”

In addition, the UAE is open to expanding its network of data centers, including ones designed exclusively to handle AI workloads. Additionally, the Emirates operate four Generation III advanced pressurized water reactor units, which provide the electricity needed to power the power-hungry data centers, according to the UAE Country Nuclear Power Profile.

From a geopolitical perspective, creating this AI partnership fortifies the US presence in this crucial region. The Center for Strategic and International Studies observed, “The UAE also became an important hub for US military operations in Southwest Asia, hosting thousands of US troops at Abu Dhabi’s Al Dhafra Air Base and hosting more US Navy sailors’ visits at Dubai’s Jebel Ali than any other port outside the United States.”

On the battlefield, the UAE has shown itself to be a willing and practical partner. What is important about the development of Task Force Talon Synapse is that the UAE has deliberately chosen the United States as a partner, foreclosing opportunities for China to gain a foothold in regional AI development. This enables the United States to establish AI use standards, reducing the opportunities for other Gulf states to adopt and become dependent on Beijing for necessary computing capability.

New Partnership Strengthens Position in Region

Furthermore, the relationship between the US and the UAE has strengthened amid the Iran conflict. “The United Arab Emirates has gained expanded access from the U.S. to coveted artificial-intelligence chips after aiding America in recent months by carrying out dozens of airstrikes against Iran, intercepting hundreds of missiles and keeping oil moving through the Strait of Hormuz,” The Wall Street Journal reported. According to the WSJ, this access to the AI chips will greatly increase UAE AI capabilities and is the culmination of “a yearslong push by the Gulf state to obtain American technology to diversify its economy. The decision also highlights the central role chips have come to play during diplomatic discussions.”

As the effective use of AI in strengthening national security becomes more vital, having a reliable partner among the Gulf States is critical. Task Force Talon Synapse will draw the US and UAE closer in establishing an AI bulwark in the conflict against Iran. At some point, that conflict will be over, and having a solid technological relationship with the UAE will sustain a useful presence in the region.
