Thanksgiving has come and gone, and now we are in the most wonderful time of the year – Christmas. Santa Claus is finalizing his accounting of the naughty and the nice, which is completed by Dec. 4, Santa’s List Day. Let’s take a step back in time to learn where both Santa Claus and his itemized checklist began.
The Origin of Santa Claus
Santa is depicted as a jolly figure dressed in a red suit and hat who delivers gifts on Christmas Eve to children around the world. His mode of transportation? A decorated sleigh propelled by eight flying reindeer. But where did this character come from?
Important is the tale of the 4th-century Christian bishop named St. Nicholas, who lived in what now the country of Turkey. He was a beloved priest, known for his generosity, gift-giving, and special devotion to caring for the young.

Several hundred years later, in 16th-century England, a figure known as Father Christmas entered the scene. An imposing man who wore a green or scarlet robe lined with fur, he brought good cheer, peace, and joy to the holidays. He was celebrated on Dec. 25, to coincide with Christmas Day.
In the late 18th century, Dutch settlers who migrated to America brought with them the tale of Sinterklaas, the Dutch name for St. Nicholas. They honored the life of Sinterklaas by celebrating with a giant feast and an exchange of gifts.
Kris Kringle, a German legend based on “Christkindl” (Christ Child) who was noted for being a gift-giver, and poems such as “’Twas the Night Before Christmas” helped to shape Santa into the portly, rosy-cheeked figure so popular today.
Santa’s List, Checking It Twice
At the North Pole, Santa and his elves work hard year-round designing and building the most desired toys on Christmas morning. On Santa’s List Day, the names of children and their standing as naughty or nice are released for all to see. Those who land on the misbehaving side expect a chunk of coal on Christmas morning. Those who made a good showing, however, are set to receive exactly what they asked for when they climbed onto Santa’s lap.
The origin of Santa’s List Day is unclear. However, the tradition of the checklist goes back as far as Santa himself. Sinterklaas was believed to carry a large red book that contained the names of children and whether they were good or bad that year. The tradition has continued through such holiday songs as 1934’s “Santa Claus Is Coming to Town,” in the lyrics by J. Fred Coots and Haven Gillespie: “He’s making a list. He’s checking it twice. He’s gonna find out who’s naughty or nice.”
