A federal judge has blocked President Donald Trump’s administration from sending 200 National Guard troops to Portland, Oregon. The decision comes after the State of Oregon and City of Portland sued the Trump administration, claiming the deployment exceeded the president’s legal authority.

Former NFL Quarterback Stabbed in Indianapolis

Former Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez was stabbed during an altercation in Indianapolis early Saturday morning. The ex-football star is in stable condition, according to FOX Sports. “We are deeply grateful to the medical team for their exceptional care and support. Our thoughts and prayers are with Mark, and we ask that everyone please respect his and his family’s privacy during this time,” FOX Sports said in a statement.

Israel Agrees to ‘Initial Withdrawal’ Under Trump Peace Plan

Hours after Hamas agreed to release the remaining hostages in accordance with President Donald Trump’s peace plan, Israel has agreed to move forward with an “initial withdrawal line.” “When Hamas confirms, the Ceasefire will be IMMEDIATELY effective, the Hostages and Prisoner Exchange will begin, and we will create the conditions for the next phase of withdrawal, which will bring us close to the end of this 3,000 YEAR CATASTROPHE. Thank you for your attention to this matter and, STAY TUNED!” Trump said in a post on Truth Social.

Shutdown Costs $1.2 Billion for Furloughed Workers’ Pay So Far

According to data from the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) shared by Sen. Joni Ernst (R-IA) the government shutdown is costing taxpayers roughly $400 million per day to pay furloughed federal employees. The total cost has already reached a staggering $1.2 billion.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) said the two parties are at a “stalemate” due to Democrat demands that Thune described as “not realistic,” like extending Affordable Care Act subsidies. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) continues to accuse the GOP of offering “nothing.”

Senate Rejects Bills to End Government Shutdown

The Senate rejected legislation to end the US government shutdown, now in its first week. Senators voted 52-42 on a Republican stopgap funding bill for a fifth time, which would have maintained government spending at Biden-era levels until late November. Sens. Catherine Cortez Masto (D-NV), Angus King (I-ME), and John Fetterman (D-PA) joined Republicans to reopen the government for the fourth time. The upper chamber also voted across party lines against a rival Democratic stopgap bill that includes several health care provisions.

Government Shutdown Could Cost the Economy $15 Billion a Week: WH Economist

The government shutdown could cost the US economy approximately $15 billion a week, according to National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett. In an interview with CNBC’s Squawk Box on October 6, Hassett warned that a prolonged shutdown could harm the world’s largest economy. “My friends over at the Council of Economic Advisers gave me a report at the end of the week that said that it costs the US GDP about $15 billion a week for a shutdown, or about a tenth of a percent of GDP,” Hassett said.

Former New York Times Writer Bari Weiss Named CBS News Editor-in-Chief

Bari Weiss, a former New York Times opinion writer and founder of The Free Press, has been named editor-in-chief of CBS News. The move was part of a deal in which Paramount Skydance acquired the online news website. While the deal’s value was not disclosed, reports suggest the purchase was around $150 million. “We are challenging ourselves to do better — recognizing that we have the ability to reach a broad audience and demonstrate constructive, respectful, and bipartisan dialogue in our own work,” Paramount Skydance CEO David Ellison said. “She brings a passion for reaching broad audiences through rigorous, fact-based reporting and a relentless commitment to amplifying voices from all corners of the spectrum.” Weiss resigned from the newspaper in July 2020, accusing her colleagues of “constant bullying” over her views. Two years later, she founded The Free Press.

New Tariffs on Medium and Heavy Duty Trucks Will Take Effect on November 1: Trump

President Donald Trump announced on social media that his new tariffs on all medium- and heavy-duty trucks entering the United States will take effect next month, imposing a 25% import duty. “Beginning November 1st, 2025, all Medium and Heavy Duty Trucks coming into the United States from other Countries will be Tariffed at the Rate of 25 [percent],” Trump wrote in an Oct. 6 Truth Social post.

MTG Wants English to be America’s Official Language Ahead of Super Bowl

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) wants English to become the official language of the United States ahead of entertainer Bad Bunny’s Super Bowl halftime show. The Puerto Rican pop star recently urged the country to learn Spanish before his performance in the annual event. But Greene pushed back on social media. “Bad Bunny says America has 4 months to learn Spanish before his perverse unwanted performance at the Super Bowl halftime,” she said on X. “It would be a good time to pass my bill to make English the official language of America,” the representative continued. “And the NFL needs to stop having demonic sexual performances during its halftime shows.”

White House Plans to Use Tariff Revenue to Fund Nutrition Program

The White House announced on October 7 that it will allocate funds from tariff revenues to support a nutrition program facing a shortage amid the government shutdown. In a post on X, White House Press Secretary Karoline announced that the administration will redirect tariff income to the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children, also known as WIC. The program is set to run out of money in the coming days.

Senate Republicans Confirm 107 Trump Nominees

The Senate GOP confirmed a batch of President Donald Trump’s nominees. The upper chamber voted 51-47 to confirm 107 individuals. Headlining the package of nominees were Herschel Walker and top White House aide Sergio Gor, who will be the ambassadors to the Bahamas and India, respectively. The confirmation votes also pertained to numerous US attorneys and ambassadorial appointments. Additionally, Paul Atkins was reappointed as head of the Securities and Exchange Commission until 2031.

Some Federal Workers May Not ‘Deserve’ Back Pay Amid Shutdown

President Trump told reporters at the Oval Office on Oct. 7 that some federal workers may not “deserve” to receive back pay once the government shutdown is over. During a meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, Trump told the press that furloughed civil servants might not be entitled to paychecks missed during the government shutdown, now in its second week. The last shutdown contained the Government Employee Fair Treatment Act of 2019, which mandates that federal workers affected by future shutdowns be paid after the government reopens.

US Latino Population Reaches 68 Million: Study

A new study suggests that 68 million individuals identify as Latino. According to a report by the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and California Lutheran University, using 2024 Census Bureau data, one in five people living in the United States is Latino.

Gold Prices Top $4,000 for the First Time on Record

Gold is shining bright. The yellow metal cracked the $4,000 mark during the Oct. 7 trading session and continued climbing in overnight trading. Senate Sinks Resolution to Block Trump’s Strikes on Drug Boats
