While many of history’s most famous inventions were created more than a century ago, innovation did not stop with the light bulb, telephone, and automobile. Some of the most life-changing ideas were developed over the last few decades in American garages, living rooms, and kitchens, including the revolutionary Miracle Mop of Joy Mangano
Miracle Mop of Joy Mangano
Every parent knows spills are just part of the job of raising children. As a mother of three, Mangano was all too familiar with the messes that came with family life. After countless cleanups, Mangano became determined to create a better solution, and, in 1990, she developed the first self-wringing Miracle Mop.
Joy Mangano believed in her product so strongly that she turned her prototype into 100 finished mops, an effort that cost nearly $100,000, according to Biography.com. In her first year, her persistence, her hands-on salesmanship, and her children filling orders paid off as she sold several thousand mops.
In 1992, Mangano pitched her groundbreaking cleaning tool to executives at QVC, a home-shopping network. The Miracle Mop first appeared on the channel without Mangano and basically flopped. The mop’s creator insisted she could sell it if they let her go on the air, and she was right: The Miracle Mop sold out in less than half an hour with Mangano making the sales pitch. She moved more than 18,000 mops during her first appearance on the network.
But Mangano’s first time on air didn’t go off without a hitch. At first, Mangano froze, but she quickly pulled herself together and was able to perform. “As much as I tried to prepare, I was so nervous. But I told myself that it didn’t matter what anyone thought about me – it only mattered that I believed in myself,” Mangano told Forbes. “I focused on one thing only – to talk. Once I started talking about what I knew – that’s when I got myself to perform. To this day, I still try to prepare for everything as if it’s my first time.”
According to CNBC, by 2021, Mangano had sold more than 10 million Miracle Mops. “I knew in my heart that the Miracle Mop would make people’s lives a little better … so I took my idea everywhere I could, and I told everyone who would listen. I believed in it, and I knew deep down they would too,” Mangano said.

While Joy Mangano is best known for the Miracle Mop, her entrepreneurial spirit has led her to create hundreds of products, including JOY Huggable Hangers, My Little Steamer, the Memory Cloud Pillow, Better Beauty Cases, wine coolers, Forever Fragrant products, Piatto bakery box, and a new wheel system for luggage. She has also obtained more than 100 trademarks and patents.
Mangano said she is inspired by the thought of improving people’s lives – but the “biggest thrill” has been to “share this journey” with her children. When it comes to new inventions, the Miracle Mop creator says she always asks herself, “Is this product exceptional, innovative and meaningful to people’s lives?” She told Forbes, “I think it’s important to apply that to life, too, to be sure that the core of who we are is authentic and solid, no matter what path we choose.”
