Suspect Dead After Firing Shots at White House
A suspect who opened fire at a White House security checkpoint on May 23 has died, federal officials said. According to a statement from the US Secret Service, the individual approached the checkpoint shortly after 6 p.m., pulled a revolver from his bag, and began shooting at officers. Officers returned fire, striking the suspect. He was taken to a nearby hospital, where he later died. No officers were injured, and President Donald Trump was not “impacted,” but there was a bystander hit in the crossfire. “This incident remains under investigation and additional information will be released as it becomes available,” the statement read. It was later reported that the bystander’s injuries were not life threatening, but that he had been shot by the Secret Service accidentally.
US Naval Blockade Redirects 100 Commercial Vessels: Centcom
US Central Command (Centcom) confirmed on May 23 that it redirected more than 100 commercial vessels amid the naval blockade of Iranian ports in the Strait of Hormuz. Since President Trump established the blockade in April, more than 15,000 US troops have turned around 100 ships, disabled four, and allowed 26 humanitarian aid vessels to travel through the narrow waterway located between Iran and the Arabian Peninsula.
Trump Says US ‘Closer’ to Iran Agreement
President Trump told CBS News on May 23 that the United States is “getting a lot closer” to an agreement with Iran. “I will only sign a deal where we get everything we want,” the president stated. “We’re going to have a deal, or we’re going to have a situation where no country will ever be hit as hard as they’re about to be hit.” He stopped short of providing additional details of a deal, but noted that an agreement would “absolutely” prevent Tehran from developing a nuclear weapon.
Zelensky: Ukraine Deserves Full EU Membership
Ukraine deserves full membership to the European Union, says President Volodymyr Zelensky. In a recent letter obtained by the AFP, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz proposed making Kyiv an “associate member” without voting rights. But Zelensky, in his daily address on May 23, argued that the 27-member bloc must accept Ukraine as a member “with full rights,” otherwise the Eastern European country would be “voiceless.”
Congolese Ebola Tent Set on Fire for Second Time This Week
For the second time in a week, a Congolese tent used for treatment of the Ebola outbreak was set on fire, according to the Associated Press. Eighteen people suspected of infection left the clinic, though the number who arrived at the facility is unknown. The tent was initially set up by the Doctors Without Borders humanitarian group.
