A new ceasefire agreement between Cambodia and Thailand took effect on December 27 following a weeks-long territorial dispute that saw dozens killed and thousands displaced. A key part of the latest deal involves Thailand returning 18 Cambodian soldiers held in Thai custody since the summer, according to the Associated Press.
Zelensky Meets With Canadian PM Before Trump Talks
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky met with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney in Halifax, Nova Scotia, on December 27. The gathering comes ahead of Zelensky’s meeting with President Trump to discuss the 20-point plan aimed at ending the Ukraine-Russia conflict. Ottawa also announced an additional $2.5 billion economic package for Kyiv.
African Union, Somalia Slam Israel Over Recognition of Somaliland
Officials from the African Union and Somalia slammed Israel over its recognition of Somaliland as an independent state, claiming that it undermines Somalia’s sovereignty. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that his country will be the first to recognize Somaliland as a country since it broke away from Somalia in 1991, “in the spirit of the Abraham Accords.”

China Conducts Military Drills Around Taiwan in Message to US, Japan
China’s military on Monday “dispatched air, navy and rocket troops to conduct joint military drills around the island of Taiwan, a move Beijing called a ‘stern warning’ against separatist and ‘external interference’ forces,” the Associated Press reports. “Taiwan said it was placing its forces on alert and called the Chinese government ‘the biggest destroyer of peace.’”

Minnesota GOP Lawmakers Call on Tim Walz to Resign
Embattled Minnesota Democrat Gov. Tim Walz is facing increasing heat from a runaway fraud scandal involving the sizable Somali community in the state. Several Republican lawmakers on Monday released a statement officially urging Walz to resign from office.
DHS: Massive Fraud Investigation Underway in Minneapolis
The Department of Homeland Security on Monday announced it is “conducting a massive operation” in Minneapolis to investigate allegations of widespread fraud involving the Somali community in Minnesota. DHS is on the ground in Minneapolis, going door to door at suspected fraud sites,” a department X post read.
Trump: Hamas Must Disarm Soon or ‘There Will Be Hell to Pay’
President Donald Trump on Monday met at his Mar-a-Lago residence with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and delivered some harsh words afterwards for Hamas. “They’re going to be given a very short period of time to disarm,” Trump declared. “And we’ll see how that works out. [US special envoys] Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner will be in charge of that, from our side. But if they don’t disarm, as they agreed to do – they agreed to it – then there will be hell to pay for them. And we don’t want that. We’re not looking for that. But they have to disarm within a fairly short period of time.”

Zohran Mamdani Sworn in as NYC Mayor
It’s official. Self-proclaimed socialist Zohran Mamdani was sworn in as New York City’s 112th mayor by state Attorney General Letitia James in a small ceremony shortly after midnight Thursday. Mamdani was sworn in on a Koran at an abandoned old subway stop below City Hall Park. A public swearing-in presided over by Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) will be held at City Hall later in the day.
