Shots Fired at Federal Agents in Chicago

Officers in Chicago responded Saturday to a call of gunshots fired at federal agents amid immigration enforcement operations that led residents to protest in the streets, Associated Press reported. No one was reported struck by the bullets, according to the local police. The Department of Homeland Security said on X that the shots were fired by a man in a black Jeep. So far, the suspect and vehicle have yet to be located.

A Russian Attack on Ukraine Targeted Nuclear Substations

Seven people were killed Saturday in a Russian drone and missile strike on two nuclear power plant substations, Ukrainian officials reported. “Russia once again targeted substations that power the Khmelnytskyi and Rivne nuclear power plants,” Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha wrote on X.

More Than 1,400 Flights Cancelled on Second Day of US Restrictions

More than 1,400 flights to, from, or inside the United States were cancelled on Saturday, the second day since airports were told to cut traffic during the shutdown. Another 6,000 flights were delayed, as well.

IRS Ends Free Direct File Program

The IRS is ending the Direct File program, which allows taxpayers to file returns directly to the IRS without any out-of-pocket costs. It began as a pilot program in 2023 in 12 states and was expanded to 25 states in 2024.

The moves are meant to relieve strain caused by the numbers of air traffic controllers missing time as they stop receiving pay due to the impasse.
