in the U.S., a speech given by the president to Congress at the beginning of each year, on the topic of current issues facing the country; since 1913, this has been the way presidents have fulfilled the requirement in the Constitution to “give to the Congress Information of the State of the Union, and recommend to their Consideration such measures as he shall judge necessary and expedient.”
