On Wednesday, Jan. 15, negotiators reportedly reached an agreement to enact a ceasefire that could mark the end of 15 months of fighting between Israel and the Hamas terror group.
The deal, which has not yet been officially approved, was part of efforts by Qatar and other regional powers. Early reports suggest that it includes a return of hostages in exchange for a halt to the war and the release of Palestinians who were arrested by the Israeli government. Fox News reports that:
While other ceasefire agreements have been reached in this conflict, they have been swiftly broken. The input of regional partners, and the positive boon the return of hostages would bring to Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, however, suggest that this latest iteration may have more staying power. Several hurdles remain before the deal becomes official, but multiple reports indicate that it has a significant chance of being accepted by all sides.
President-elect Donald Trump was quick to claim his share of the credit, posting on Truth Social, “This EPIC ceasefire agreement could have only happened as a result of our Historic Victory in November, as it signaled to the entire World that my Administration would seek Peace and negotiate deals to ensure the safety of all Americans, and our Allies. I am thrilled American and Israeli hostages will be returning home to be reunited with their families and loved ones.”
This is a developing story.
