Trump Set to Meet with Congressional Leaders Monday

President Donald Trump is scheduled to meet with several congressional leaders on September 29, ahead of a potential Tuesday deadline for a government shutdown. In a joint statement from Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY), Trump will meet with the Democratic leaders, as well as House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) and Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD), at the Oval Office. Government funding runs out after Sept. 30, forcing a government shutdown unless Congress takes action.

Troops Going to Portland, President Trump Confirms

President Trump announced in a Sept. 27 social media post that he will be sending troops to Portland, Oregon. According to the president, he will be sending personnel to “protect” the city and shield Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facilities from Antifa and other “domestic terrorists.” Various officials confirmed to media outlets that US military personnel are prepared to mobilize.

United Nations Resumes Sanctions on Iran

The United Nations reinstated sanctions on Iran over its nuclear program. Following last-minute discussions on the sidelines of this week’s UN General Assembly, officials from France, Germany, and the United Kingdom have chosen to reinstitute an arms embargo and other sanctions on Iran, which were first adopted in 2006 and 2010, effective September 28 at 8 p.m.

Hurricane Humberto Strengthens to Category 5

Hurricane Humberto strengthened into a Category 5 storm, according to the National Hurricane Center. Officials say the hurricane is unlikely to make landfall, but parts of the Caribbean and the southeast United States could experience large swells and rip currents. Hurricane-force winds extend 25 miles from the center, the organization confirmed.
