China has taken action against three U.S. members of Congress: Representative Chris Smith from New Jersey, Senator Ted Cruz from Texas and Senator Marco Rubio from Florida. What’s going on? These three men have condemned China for the way it is treating one of its groups – the Uighurs.
Who are the Uighurs?
The Uighurs are a group of people who live in northern China, in an area called Xinjiang. There are about 12 million Uighur people. They’re Muslim and have a culture close to Central Asian nations.
For years, Uighurs have been sent to prison or accused of terrorism. The Uighurs say the government is suppressing their way of life.
The Chinese government says the Uighurs want their own independent country and will do anything to make it happen.
Are the Uighurs in Danger?
Since 2017, about one million Uighurs have been arrested and sent detention camps in Xinjiang. At first China had denied that these camps existed, but satellite footage showed they were real. The U.S. and 30 other countries have condemned these camps.
We don’t know what will happen to the Uighurs, but things do seem to be getting worse. If it were not for the Coronavirus pandemic, this issue might have gotten a lot more attention in 2020.
