Shipwreck of USS Nevada Discovered
A relic from World War II was discovered beneath the Pacific Ocean. The USS Nevada was a battleship. It saw a lot of action before it was buried.
On December 7, 1941, the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Fighter planes damaged more than 300 American airplanes and almost 20 ships, including eight battleships. More than 2,400 people died in the attack, and about 1,000 more were injured. The USS Nevada was the only battleship to get started during the attack, even though it was damaged by bombs a torpedo.
After being repaired, the battleship was used in World War II battles, like the Okinawa and Iwo Jima invasions, where she was damaged again.
Once her service to the war had ended, the USS Nevada became a target ship to test the atomic bomb. This damaged the ship and made her radioactive. She was sunk by torpedoes and gunfire on purpose.
Dr. James Delgado, a maritime archaeologist who helped to find the ship, said the discovery “reminds us not only of past events, but of those who took up the challenge of defending the United States in two global wars. This is why we do ocean exploration – to seek out those powerful connections to the past.”
Oldest Lady in Spain Survives Coronavirus
It’s a scary time in the world right now. People all over the globe are doing social-distancing and self-isolation. The story of 113-year-old Maria Branyas gives hope to people worried about the pandemic.
The virus mostly affects older people and those with weak immune systems, but Maria survived. She got the virus in March and spent a few months in isolation. Luckily, she recovered. This isn’t the first crisis the woman has gone through in 113 years.
Born in Mexico in 1907, Maria experienced the 1918 Spanish flu pandemic, which infected 500 million people and killed 50 million. She also lived through two world wars, as well as the Spanish Civil War. She moved to San Francisco during WWII, then went to live in Spain.
Maria has three children (one of them just turned 86 years old), 11 grandchildren (the oldest is 60), and 13 great-grandchildren.
Space Force Launches Secret Mission
The Space Force just launched a “space plane” into orbit around the Earth. The X-37B space plane looks like a miniature shuttle. It uses solar power and is flown using remote controls, so there’s no need for a pilot.
The X-37B mission goals are secret, but it is carrying a satellite. It also has an area just for holding and conducting experiments. The Space Force is in charge of the mission, but the plane belongs to the Air Force.
This is actually the sixth mission by the new Space Force. The X-37B mission is mysterious because nobody knows exactly what the craft will be doing in orbit.
This mission is also special because it is dedicated to the first responders during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Space Force is the sixth branch of the U.S. military. It was started in 2019, the first new branch since the Air Force began in 1947.
