Hong Kong Loses Freedom
Did Hong Kong just lose some of its freedom? Hong Kong is a city half in China and half outside of China. It used to belong to Britain. It was handed back to China in 1997, but the area was meant to be unchanged for 50 years. The area has special rules that make it freer than the rest of China – but new laws might change that.
Last year, Hong Kong had protests as people tried to keep the area’s freedom and special independence against the Chinese government. China has been slowly gaining more power over this region. The newest law by the president took more power for China.
Frederick Douglass Statue Torn Down
A statue of Frederick Douglass was toppled. Douglass was a former slave. Douglass escaped slavery in Maryland in 1838. He made his way to New York, where he worked to end slavery.
Douglass’ statue stood at Kelsey’s Landing. This is the spot where he, Harriet Tubman, and others helped escaping slaves along the Underground Railroad.
Kanye West for President?
Rapper Kanye West said that he is going to run for president.
West’s said he wants to stop police acting cruelly. He also wants to change schools to put “fear and love of God” in education. He opposes forcing people to have a vaccine injection for the Coronavirus.
