Martin Luther King, Jr. was a famous leader of the American Civil Rights Movement during the 1960s. The Christian minister worked hard to get equal rights for black people in the United States, at a time when people of different colors were segregated (lived apart from each other).
His birthday, January 15, 1929, is still celebrated with a holiday each year – this time falling on January 20.
King is most famous for his “I Have a Dream” speech, given during the 1963 March on Washington, but he helped organize famous protests and won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964. King was killed in 1968, but American life changed forever because of his vision of a society where people of all races could live equally.
