Only three countries have landed a spacecraft on moon before, the US, China, and Russia. Now India has joined the club. The Vikram is a type of spaceship that has inside it a lunar rover, which is a small vehicle for moving around on the moon.
After a 48-day journey from Earth, the Vikram landed on the surface of the moon, but there was a problem. Possibly because of a mechanical issue, it looks like it landed on its side, so scientists back in India can’t connect to it or the lunar rover.
The rover is called Pragyan, which means “wisdom.” It was supposed to be a small science lab that could move from crater to crater to see if there was any water on the moon. India’s space agency hoped that it could look in craters that are usually in shadows, meaning that we can’t see in them using telescopes or satellites.
For now, most of the scientists think that this mission is over. If they can’t connect to Pragyan, they can’t do their tests. Many people think it is still a success. India has a very old culture that is not as modern as the United States, but by sending a craft to the moon, the country shown the world that it has cutting-edge scientific abilities.
The leader of India, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, said, “As important as the final result is … I can proudly say that the effort was worth it, and so was the journey. Our team worked hard, traveled far, and those teachings will always remain with us.”
