1. a system that separates people according to skin color, ethnicity, etc.; segregation
2. The system that existed in South Africa during the 1940s-1990s, where people were forced to live separately according to their skin color, with whites as the ruling class over other races; comes from the Afrikaans word for “separateness” or “the state of being apart”
